at the order of the authorities, Internet services of all kinds were shut down, except those of the Netvision company, which continued to provide services to the local authority, to the Palestinian Authority and to those close to the Palestinian reign. The cellular telephone companies ceased their activity upon the emergency regulation and millions of telephones were rendered useless at the whim of one administrative decision. Only one cellular network was re-operated thereafter, and it was only active for "insider" subscribers. The protest of the press was not heard due to the fear of a ruthless takeover and in the official newspapers there was only a small mention of the shutdown act. "The shutdown is necessary in order to prevent any abuse of communications or their use in order to commit acts of terror", said the Minister of the Interior, Ahmed Kivi. The daily Israeli press began to hesitantly cooperate with the new owners. In a forum comprised of only newspaper editors, it was said that "Constructive criticism was acceptable, but definitely not accusatory criticism". The editors' question as to who decides how to distinguish between constructive criticism and accusatory criticism, remained unanswered. Almost immediately the Israeli editors received a lesson when one of the prominent journalists of the Ma'ariv newspaper criticized the Authority for not handling the complaints of the citizens of former Israel regarding theft and exploitation by powerful Palestinians and the eviction of innocent civilians from their homes. That night, when he left the newspaper office to the parking lot, a group of Orthodox students attacked him, broke his teeth and eyeglasses and smashed the windshields of his car. The journalist was taken to the Ichilov hospital, but did not dare continue to file a complaint at the police station. The hint was properly understood, and the Israeli press quickly fell into line with the policy of the new Palestinian government. Due to the blocking of cellular phone services and Internet services, posters began to appear on lampposts, trees and the walls of buildings in central areas of Tel-Aviv and the vicinity. Sometimes the posters were scattered on the city sidewalks and the Israeli citizens of Palestine would bend over and slip the posters into their pockets on the sly. The belligerent posters were written by Israeli underground factions, and they constituted a sort of news substitute for the citizens of Israel. Surprise ambushes by the Palestinian police failed to find and arrest those who hung the posters, who were widely assisted by the local population. Even if someone was caught and arrested, it became apparent that he was unable to lead the investigators, despite torture, to those responsible for circulating the posters. The posters severely attacked the Israeli press, for bending over and accepting the occupation of Israel and its fall into enemy hands, the Palestinian press, the treacherous Arab-Israelis, the Jewish party headed by Dan Bohen and the Minister for Jewish Affairs, Yosef Harig. Yosef Feigin, who was appointed to be a traveling ambassador of the State of Palestine, to represent its interests in all that concerns the former State of Israel, was condemned to death by all of the Israeli undergrounds, and therefore took pains to avoid coming to Israel, spending most of his life at cocktail parties in the various embassies of the State of Palestine. There he made efforts to meet with various ambassadors and Foreign Ministers, and was honored like a king. From time to time he would even appear in the international press and represent the Palestinian State in the sense of "whitewashing the wrongdoer". That's all folks |
